English Language Institute (ELI)


All non-native English speakers are required to provide English proficiency examinations to be admitted to FIU. A minimum score is required for all undergraduate and graduate programs and are as follows:
IELTS: 6.5
TOEFL Paper-based: 550
TOEFL Internet-based(iBT): 80

The IEP is an academic preparation course designed to help international students make the transition to American academic life in a relatively short time through full-time instruction in English as a second language.

The IEP program consists of 8 levels, from Level 0 (Foundation) to Level 7. Students complete one level per term. There are three terms per year: 14 weeks (Fall & Spring) and 12 weeks (Summer).

Classes are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.

We offer iBT and PBT TOEFL® preparation courses for those individuals seeking admission to FIU. The ELI TOEFL® preparation courses are offered at convenient times each term. Classes are small to ensure personal attention to students’ needs, and instructors are trained test specialists.

Admissions Requirements


If you already meet the English proficiency requirements, you may be eligible for direct admission to FIU’s undergraduate programs! For undergraduate admission, the requirements are as follows:
• Complete and submit an online application
• Pay the $30 application fee
• Send hard copy official transcripts or certified originals
• Request official TOEFL or IELTS test scores to be sent directly to FIU
• Request official SAT or ACT test scores to be sent directly to FIU
Are you applying as an undergraduate and have previously taken university or college coursework? If so, please also submit the following:
• Hard copy official transcripts of all university coursework completed
• If you completed coursework internationally, you must submit your transcripts for a course-by-course evaluation to a NACES.org member company.
Graduate admission at FIU is based on individual program requirements. The minimum grade point average (GPA) required for admission is a 3.0 out of U.S. 4.0 scale on upper-level coursework. You must also meet the TOEFL score requirement. The requirements are listed below:
• Complete and submit an Online graduate application and pay the $30 application fee
• Send hard copy official transcripts in a sealed institutional envelope from all previous institutions
• Request official TOEFL or IELTS test scores to be sent directly to FIU
• Proof of degree/diploma

Once you are admitted and submit your immigration information (passport, declaration of finances, etc.) you will receive your I-20 along with your admissions letter.
